Only 5,000 1876-S quarter eagles were struck and while this issue is not as rare as the half eagles and eagles of this date/mint, the quarter eagle is a tough issue especially in Uncirculated. There are an estimated 15-20 known in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62 range.
This very frosty example has attractive natural orange-gold and rose color. The surfaces are lightly scuffed but there are no detracting abrasions noted. A small raised bar on the neck of Liberty is mint-made and is found on all genuine 1876-S quarter eagles.
Two PCGS MS61 1876-S quarter eagles were sold in Heritage sales held during the last two years; both realized $2,760.
A lot of coin for less than $3,000!
