The 1876-S is the final scarce quarter eagle from the San Francisco mint. Only 5,000 were struck and there are an estimated 200-250 known, mostly in the EF and AU grades.
This frosty slider shows no real wear but there is enough breaking of the luster in the obverse fields to rightfully call it a 58 coin. The color is a pleasing natural yellow-gold with rose shadings and the strike is typical for the issue with a touch of softness at the centers. There is a diagnostic raised bar on the throat of Liberty which is mint-made. A small mark on the denticles beneath the 1 in the date occurred after striking.
There have been no PCGS AU58 examples of this date sold at auction since August 2007. The last NGC AU58 to cross the block realized $1,880 as Heritage 10/14: 4236.
