The story of the S.S. Central America is familiar to most collectors. More than a decade after these coins have hit the market it is easy to see that they were a tremendous boost to the double eagle market and to numismatics in general.
This choice, frosty example is essentially an MS62 to MS63 with just the slightest trace of friction on the cheek. The surfaces are lightly marked and there is a small reverse grease stain, as made. Of note is the fact that the color is pleasing and this coin has not “turned” in the holder as have a number of 1857-S double eagles from this source.
A virtual twin of this coin, ex Heritage 2/13: 3989, sold for $5,875 while another similar example, ex Heritage 1/13: 7476, sold for $5,581. Neither of these coins came with the original presentation box.
This is a superb SSCA double eagle with all the “bells and whistles.”
