POPULAR 1857-S DOUBLE EAGLE WITH ORIGINAL SKIN
This date is now famous for being the primary cargo in the SS Central America shipwreck. Non-shipwreck examples are clearly overlooked and they can easily be distinguished from their shipwreck counterparts.
This example shows deep toning on the obverse and reverse which offers the sort of “Euro” appearance found on gold coins which have been repatriated from overseas. It is lightly worn and lightly scuffed with an excellent overall appearance.
The last non-SSCA 1857-S double eagle in NGC AU58 to sell at auction brought $3,290 as Heritage 8/15: 6321; it was not CAC approved.
