Along with the 1855, the 1856 is the most undervalued and overlooked Philadelphia Type One double eagle. It is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55, rare in AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated.
This choice, original example shows nice deep russet color. Unlike many deeply toned double eagles of this era, it does not appear to have been stored in a bank vault and it lacks the Euro appearance seen on such coins. A few ticks in the obverse fields keep this out of the AU55 range.
The last AU53 1856 double eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction was a PCGS coin which brought $4,700 as Heritage 8/12: 4723.
