SCARCE CHOICE AU 1855 TWENTY WITH CAC APPROVAL
The four Philadelphia double eagles produced from 1855 through 1858 are all scarce, undervalued issues which become very tough to locate in properly graded AU58 and above. The 1855 is rare and expensive in Uncirculated, making nice AU58′s a practical alternative for many Type One collectors.
This very choice slider saw very little–if any–actual circulation but there is enough friction on the obverse high spots to grade it AU58. It is very lustrous and lightly marked with attractive natural soft orange-gold hues on both sides. The eye appeal is well above-average for the issue and this is primarily due to this coin’s uncommonly clean fields.
Four PCGS AU58 1855 double eagles have sold at auction since 2011, none with CAC approval. An NGC AU58 with a CAC sticker brought $5,170 as Heritage 4/15: 4214. I sold a different PCGS/CAC AU58 for $6,500 in the stronger late 2014 Type One market.
This is the best available quality at under $10,000 and it represents an uncommonly choice example of this underappreciated date.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade with four finer.
