A small number of 1854 Small Date double eagles are known. These show doubling on the underside of the serif of the 1 and the tops of the 54. This variety is scarce in all grades, very scarce in AU and very rare in Uncirculated.
This piece has original skin with rich orange-gold and green color accentuated by darker highlights. The surfaces are lightly marked and there is a visible mark on the throat of Liberty. The reverse is a bit choppy in the fields and this is not uncommon for this variety.
Heritage 1/13: 7466, graded EF45 by NGC and approved by CAC, was the last slabbed example of this variety to sell at auction; it brought $3,290.
A neat piece for the gold coin variety specialist.
