The 1853-O is far scarcer than the 1851-O or 1852-O double eagles in AU grades and it becomes really hard to locate in AU53 to AU55 with original color and choice surfaces.
This medium green gold example has the exact “right” color for this issue and this hue is contrasted by some darker color on the portrait as a result of overseas storage. Both sides are much cleaner than normal for the issue and the strike is extremely sharp, especially the obverse. The left side of the mintmark is slightly faint, as made. A very attractive 1853-O double eagle.
The last AU53 with CAC approval to sell at auction was Newman V: 3347 which sold for a strong $16,450 in 2014. A non-CAC NGC 53 brought $12,925 as Heritage 4/15: 6388.
A slightly finer 1853-O than this would cost in excess of $20,000; if available. For most collectors, this is the perfect grade and “look” for this date.
CAC has approved nine in AU53 with five finer.
