NICE AU53 1853-O DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1853-O is scarcer than the 1850-O through 1852-O issues but not as scarce as the 1857-O and 1858-O. It is not often seen much above AU50 to AU53 and examples graded in this range by both services tend to be scrubbed and abraded with poor eye appeal.
This light golden-orange example shows nice color which is much more natural and less washed-out than on most seen by me. It is very well struck and shows a decent amount of mint luster over surfaces which have only light, scattered marks. The level of eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.
Heritage 4/15: 6388, graded AU53 by NGC, brought $12,925 while the Newman V coin, sold by Heritage in November 2014, realized a strong $16,450, primarily due to its CAC approval.
This date becomes very expensive in grades above AU53 which make this nice example and ideal selection for an advanced collection of New Orleans double eagles.
