The 1853-O is a “tier two” issue among New Orleans double eagles. It is scarcer than the 1850-O, 1851-O and 1852-O but not quite as hard to find as the 1857-O and 1858-O. The 1853-O is most often seen in EF40 to AU50 grades and it is very scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55.
This very pleasing example shows nice natural medium green-gold hues on either side. It is well detailed and the surfaces are choice save for a small reeding mark in the left obverse field. The eye appeal of this coin is excellent and, unlike most, it has not been stripped-n-dipped to within an inch of its numismatic life.
A CAC approved 1853-O in NGC AU53 sold for $12,925 as Heritage 8/13: 5896 while a pair of PCGS AU’s realized $16,450 and $14,100 in 2013.
A hard coin to find in this grade and the first 1853-O double eagle that I have offered in close to a year.
