SCARCE AU50 1853-O DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1853-O is a much scarcer date than the 1850-O, 1851-O and 1852-O double eagles. It becomes hard to locate in AU50 to AU53, rare in AU55 to AU58 and exceedingly rare in Uncirculated. I would estimate that only a small percentage of the examples currently in AU50 holders display natural coloration.
This piece is fresh-to-the-market and it comes from the same source as the 1850-O and 1851-O double eagles listed above. Both sides show deep, rich natural russet color with some contrasting darker hues on the high spots. The obverse is choice for the date and grade with minimal deep scuffs and good overall detail; the reverse shows some minor areas of scuffing but it is still well detailed and has good appeal.
No CAC approved AU50 1853-O double eagle has sold at auction. A nice NGC AU50 without a sticker brought $10,575 as Heritage 1/15: 7381. In Heritage’s Newman V sale (11/14) a CAC approved NGC AU53 realized $16,450.
This is only the second CAC approved AU50 1853-O double eagle which I have offered for sale and it would fit nicely into nearly any set of New Orleans Type One double eagles.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 13 finer.
