SCARCE 1852 DOUBLE DATE TWENTY DOLLAR GOLD PIECE

FS-301; Designated by NGC.

In my experience, fewer than one in twenty 1852 double eagles shows the pronounced doubling of the date which this variety is known for. Early die state coins show four clear repunched date numerals and give the impression of an “extra heavy” date. This variety is not often seen above AU53 to AU55.

This piece is choice for the grade with unmolested medium russet color seen on both sides. There is considerable mint luster and the fields show a slightly below-average number of abrasions. The doubling on the date is clear to the naked eye.

A non-CAC NGC AU55 example of this variety sold for $3,290 as Heritage 1/15: 7373.

This variety is now recognized by both NGC and PCGS and it is included in most specialized collections.

CAC has, for the date, approved 38 in this grade and 62 finer.
