The 1852/1852 is one of the few naked-eye varieties in the Type One series which is designated by NGC and PCGS as well as being accepted by collectors of this series. It is very scarce in the mid-range AU grades and I have never personally seen one finer than MS61.
This very lustrous example has the appearance and body of an AU55 but it shows some moderate scuffs in the fields on both sides. It is well struck with light orange-gold and yellow colors becoming a bit deeper at the reverse edge.
I am pricing this coin at a 20% premium over what a “normal date” 1852 in NGC AU53 CAC would sell for which is fair, in my opinion, given that this variety is at least 10x rarer than a regular 1852.
CAC has approved seven examples in AU53 but it is unknown how many of these are the 1852/1852.
