Along with the 1852-O, this is one of the two New Orleans date which can be purchased in AU50 and higher grades by the collector for less than a low five-figure price. It becomes scarce–and expensive– in the AU55 to AU58 range and it is rare–and very expensive–in Uncirculated.

This piece was struck in medium orange-gold and it shows quite a bit of luster for the grade. The obverse is closer to a 53 or 55 on its own; the reverse shows a few light old hairlines and marks.

The last five auction records for NGC AU50 examples of this date have been between $5,750 and $6,038. The last was in April 2012 and, since then, the market for interesting, affordable New Orleans double eagles has increased by at least 10-15%.
