SCARCE PCGS AU53 1881-CC HALF EAGLE

By a significant margin, the 1881-CC is the scarcest CC half eagle struck after 1878. Only 13,386 were made and at one time the 1881-CC was almost never seen above the lower AU grades; small groups have been located in Europe which has increased the number available to well-heeled collectors.

This piece is lustrous with good detail and average quality surfaces. There are a few small grade-limiting marks seen with light magnification but the overall eye appeal is pleasing.

Only one PCGS AU53 has sold at auction since early 2007 and it realized $6,325 as Heritage 10/11: 4934.

This date gets pricey in the higher AU grades and for many collectors, this nice AU53 will be a sensible addition to their Carson City half eagle set.
