CHOICE AU 1880-CC HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
Along with the 1882-CC, this is the most available CC half eagle from the 1880's. The 1880-CC has become relatively available in the higher AU grades as a result of coins located in Europe. It remains rare and expensive in Uncirculated.
This lightly worn, frosty coin is well detailed with medium yellow-gold color over minimally abraded surfaces. I have seen inferior examples of this date graded AU58.
A similar PCGS/CAC AU55 1880-CC half eagle just sold for $4,465 as Stacks Bowers 3/17: 2434.
This would make an ideal type coin for the collector seeking an interesting but affordable Carson City half eagle.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with six finer.
