LIKELY FINEST KNOWN 1873-S HALF EAGLE

Due to its comparatively "high" mintage figure of 31,000, this date is overlooked. It is almost never seen above properly graded AU55 and in Uncirculated, the 1873-S half eagle is unknown and unrumored.

This "super slider" has the appearance of a nice Uncirculated example and it is undipped with excellent luster and natural light orange-gold color. There are a few small ticks seen in the left obverse field but I see no actual wear and this piece offers strong claims to the MS61 level.

No 1873-S half eagle in a PCGS AU58 holder has ever been sold at auction and the last PCGS AU55 crossed the block in 1997.

This is an amazing coin for the issue and it deserves to reside in the finest set of Liberty Head half eagles.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with none finer.
