RARE LOW MINTAGE 1872 HALF EAGLE

The 1872 half eagle is an indisputably rare issue with a low mintage of just 1,660 pieces. Its has an odd pattern of grade distribution as it is generally seen in EF to lower AU or in Uncirculated. As many as five or six exist in Mint State, likely the result of a small hoard found many years ago.

This lightly worn example retains some prooflike flash below appealing light orange-gold color. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are very clean with a near-total absence of detracting marks.

Since 2002, only two PCGS AU55 1872 half eagles have sold at auction and no PCGS AU58 has been offered.

Unless you are holding out for an MS63 to MS64 example of this date (which will cost you in excess of $20,000 if you can find one) this choice AU represents the best available quality for the 1872 half eagle.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 1 finer (MS63).
