SCARCE AND CHOICE PCGS/CAC 1860-S HALF EAGLE
While not as rare as the 1859-S or as popular as the Civil War issues from this mint, the 1860-S is another very tough and very overlooked No Motto half eagle. There are fewer than 75 known and this date is mostly seen in the VF-EF range.
If a choicer, more original AU50 1860-S half eagle exists, I've never seen it and this piece has lovely deep golden color atop lustrous, lightly abraded surfaces. This coin seems undergraded to me and I wouldn't think twice if I saw it in a 53 holder...it's that nice.
The last PCGS AU50 1860-S half eagle to sell at auction realized $5,175 as Heritage 1/04: 7000.
