RARE PCGS/CAC AU50 1858-S HALF EAGLE
The 1858-S stands out as one of the more underappreciated No Motto San Francisco half eagles. There are likely no more than 50-60 known and this date is unique in Uncirculated.
Many of the surviving 1858-S half eagle have been cleaned or processed and even those in AU holders are apt to lack natural color. The present example is choice for the issue with dusky russet color over surfaces which are lustrous and which lack detracting marks.
No PCGS AU50 1858-S half eagle has sold at auction since 1995 and only one PCGS AU53 has sold at auction since early 2006.
This is one of just two 1858-S half eagles in AU to have been approved by PCGS; the other was a choice AU58 which is now in a Midwestern collection.
