GEM PCGS/CAC AU58 1853-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 34-X; Large D.

The 1853-D is the most available half eagle from Dahlonega. Examples graded AU55 to AU58 are scarce but only a small percentage of these can be termed "choice and original."

This is a coin which is more appealing than most 1853-D half eagles in MS61 holders. It has soft, frosty luster below nice natural golden-orange color with the deepest hues seen at the right obverse. The strike is somewhat soft at the centers while the rims are stronger than usual without the beveled appearance seen on many 1853-D half eagles.

Legend 12/13: 295 was graded AU58 by PCGS and approved by CAC; it realized $6,325.

This is an ideal piece for the type collector who is looking for a single high grade Dahlonega half eagle for his set.

CAC has approved six in this grade with six finer.
