CONDITION RARITY PCGS/CAC 1850-D HALF EAGLE IN AU55

Variety 29-V.

I have long maintained that the 1850-D is one of the rarest Dahlonega half eagles in AU55 and above and this has been verified by the exceptionally low CAC figures for this date in AU55 and above.

This wonderful, fresh-to-the-market example is very well struck with a sharp mintmark. Both sides show deep natural olive-gold color and this piece appears to be strictly natural with no signs of the usual brightening or surface enhancements. With this degree of eye appeal, the 1850-D half eagle is very rare.

No CAC AU55 has ever appeared for sale at auction. Since 2011, there are five APR's for PCGS AU55's, ranging from a low of $4,406 to a high (set twice) of $4,888.

An important coin for the specialist.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade and just 1 finer (AU58).
