SCARCE PCGS AU55 1848-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 20-M.

The 1848-D is one of the true "appearance rarity" issues in the Dahlonega half eagle series. It is hard to locate in the AU grades and even more difficult without weakness of strike due to die lapping and scrubby surfaces on account of numismatic abuse.

This is among the more cosmetically appealing 1848-D half eagles which I have offered in some time. It has attractive natural yellow-gold toning and it is uncommonly well detailed. The surfaces are not heavily marked although there are a few slightly grainy areas which appear to be mint-made.

Only one PCGS AU55 1848-D half eagle has sold at auction since July 2007 and it realized $4,113 as Heritage 4/14: 6374.

This is the best available quality for the issue at less than $5,000.
