PCGS/CAC AU50 1848-C HALF EAGLE
Variety 1.
The 1848-C is a moderately scarce half eagle which becomes very scarce in the higher AU grades and very rare in Uncirculated. It is very infrequently seen with natural color and unadulterated surfaces.
This example shows deep green and russet toning on both sides with dirt in the recesses. Star eight and some of the hair are weak from strike and there is a thin old scratch on the reverse along the right wing.
No CAC approved AU50 1848-C half eagle has sold at auction. A nice non-CAC example recently brought $3,055 as Stacks Bowers 3/17: 2369.
A nice piece for the date collector or for type purposes.
CAC has approved 5 in this grade with 15 finer.
