RARE AND UNDERVALUED 1842 LARGE LETTERS HALF EAGLE

Large Letters variety.

The 1842 Large Letters is one of two varieties known for Philadelphia half eagles from this year. Both are rare and undervalued and these are the two scarcest Philadelphia half eagles struck until 1863.

This fresh-to-the-market example is cosmetically appealing with natural russet color and better than average surfaces If just a touch more luster were present, this piece would have qualified as a 45.

Only one EF40 has sold in over a decade and that coin, graded by PCGS, sold cheaply for $2,185 and Heritage 10/08: 2083.

I can think of few more undervalued US gold coins than the 1842 Large Letters half eagle.

CAC has approved this 1 piece in EF40 with 6 finer..
