NICE PCGS/CAC AU50 1840-O HALF EAGLE
Variety 3, Small O mintmark.
The 1840-O is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for half eagles from the recently-opened New Orleans mint. The 1840-O is not as scarce overall as its first-year southern counterparts from Charlotte and Dahlonega but it is much harder to locate with natural color and choice surfaces than its certified population figures might suggest.
This is an uncommonly attractive example for the grade with deep, even olive-gold color atop very clean surfaces. There is some lightness of strike at the centers as is common for this issue.
No straight-graded PCGS AU50 1840-O half has sold at auction since Heritage 11/12: 4932 brought $1,998 and that coin lacked CAC approval.
This coin is an excellent value at current levels.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 11 finer.
