CHOICE AU 1810 LARGE DATE, LARGE 5 HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

BD-4, R-2.

This is the most available of the four distinct varieties of 1810 half eagles. The 1810 Large Date, Large 5 is available without great difficulty in AU grades but probably no more than one in five is worthy of approval at CAC.

This piece is notable for its vivid peripheral color with rich reddish shades contrasting natural green-gold towards the centers. There is excellent luster and sharp detail as well as choice, unmarked surfaces. A small raised line below stars four and five on the obverse is mint-made and is found on many examples of this variety.

The last CAC approved AU55 1810 Large Date, Large 5 half eagle to sell at auction was an NGC coin which brought $10,575 as Heritage 4/15: 6173. A PCGS AU55 without CAC approval realized $9,988 as Stacks Bowers 3/15: 7374.

This is a perfect example for the type collector.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 38 finer.
