LOW MINTAGE 1880 THREE DOLLARS
Only 1,000 were struck but the 1880 was saved by contemporary dealers and hoarders and is seen in nice Uncirculated today. Since this issue didn’t circulate, pieces in EF grades and actually rarer than Gems.
This lightly worn example is notable for its attractive russet and orange-gold splashes which cover the choice surfaces.
There are no auction comparables which makes sense given how few 1880 three dollar gold pieces exist in Extremely Fine.
