NICE PCGS/CAC 1857-S QUARTER

Briggs 1-A; not designated by PCGS.

There were 82,000 quarters struck during the Gold Rush year of 1857 and this issue has an extremely low survival rate with an estimated 250-350 known overall. Collector quality EF-AU examples are extremely hard to find as most 1857-S quarters have been cleaned at one time.

This golden-grey example has similar deep natural hues on both sides and the underlying surfaces lack the usual marks. With just a touch more luster present, I could see this coin in an AU55 holder. Its originality and eye appeal is very refreshing for this issue.

Only two PCGS AU53 1857-S quarters have appeared at auction since 2004.

A nice companion piece to the popular gold issues dated 1857-S and very undervalued in this grade.

Ex Stacks Bowers 11/16: 4174 where it realized $2,115.
