VERY RARE PROOF-64 1879 QUARTER EAGLE

Only 30 Proof quarter eagles dated 1879 were produced and the survival rate of this issue is slightly more than 50%, meaning that it is likely that around 16 to 18 are known, mostly in the PR63 to PR65 range. This tends to be a well-made issue and many survivors are either cameo or Deep Cameo.

This is a very choice piece for the issue and it seems possible that it would upgrade to PR64+CAM if it were resubmitted. It shows nice contrast between the devices and the fields and the surfaces are extremely clean with just a few stray hairlines seen on both sides.

The last 1879 quarter eagle graded PR64CAM by PCGS (and approved by CAC) to sell at auction realized $17,625 as Heritage 10/12: 5648. I purchased that coin, and the current example is clearly a superior example.

This is just about the rarest Proof gold coin available under the $20,000 price barrier and I think pieces such as this have real growth potential in the long-term market.

CAC has approved 3 in PR64CAM with just 1 finer (PR65CAM) for this designation.
