ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1874 QUARTER EAGLES

Only 3,920 business strikes of this date were made and the 1874 quarter eagle is scarce in all grades. There are around a dozen known in Uncirculated with the best of these a single MS65 at PCGS; three or four exist in MS64.

This piece is fresh to the market and it is a stunning coin with completely natural frosty surfaces below subtle rose and orange-gold color. There is some light contact on the obverse--mostly in the left field--which limits the grade and some natural copper spotting which attests to the originality.

The last PCGS MS64 1874 quarter eagle to sell at auction (and the only piece since 2007) brought $9,258 as Stacks Bowers 3/11: 6292 and this piece wasn't CAC approved.

This is a strong Condition Census example of a conditionally rare issue and it is a really exceptional coin to boot.

CAC has approved just this one coin in MS64 with none finer.
