Type One reverse.
1859 quarter eagles were struck with the old or "Type One" reverse and the new or "Type Two" reverse. The Type One variety is scarce in all grades and it is very scarce and undervalued in Uncirculated.
This frosty russet-gold example is well struck and it is among the few 1859 Type One reverse quarter eagles I have seen with natural color.
A PCGS MS61 example of this variety sold for $1,880 as Heritage 10/16: 4377.
