VERY SCARCE UNCIRCULATED 1856-S QUARTER EAGLE

This is the first obtainable quarter eagle from San Francisco as the 1854-S is very rare and none were made in 1855. The 1856-S is not often seen in higher grades and there are around 15 or so currently known in Uncirculated, mostly in the MS60 to MS62 range.

Unlike most of the MS61 1856-S quarter eagles which I have seen, this piece is free of actual wear and it appears original with natural medium golden-orange color over mark-free surfaces. A bit of striking weakness on the eagle's right leg is typical for the issue.

No PCGS MS61 1856-S quarter eagle has sold at auction since March 2003.

An interesting date set could begin with the purchase of this coin as the 1856-S gold dollar, three dollars, half eagle, eagle and double eagle are all available in relatively high grades.
