Only 3,677 were made and the 1855-C is among the scarcest quarter eagles from this mint with around 100 or so known. This date is not often available above AU50 to AU53 and most seen in this range are very low end.
This example shows a typical strike for the issue with flatness seen on the radial lines in the stars. Both sides show nice natural medium russet color and the surfaces are cleaner than usual.
The most recent APR for an 1855-C quarter eagle in this grade is Heritage 10/16: 5463 which realized $4,935. Prior to this, no PCGS AU53 example had sold at auction since October 2012.
This 1855-C will fit well into a high-quality Charlotte quarter eagle collection.
