CONDITIONALLY SCARCE NGC/CAC AU55 1846-D QUARTER EAGLE

The 1846-D is among the more available quarter eagles from this mint but it becomes scarce in the higher AU grades especially with natural color and choice surfaces.

While somewhat softly impressed (as is usual for this date) this is a very choice example with attractive rich russet color which is deep in hue and which has formed over many decades of careful storage. This date is usually seen with bright or enhanced surfaces and this lovely piece is a welcome exception.

No CAC approved AU55 1846-D quarter eagles have appeared at auction. The last piece sold in this grade was slabbed by PCGS and it realized $3,349 as Stacks Bowers 2013 ANA: 5063.

This is a perfect coin for the Dahlonega quarter eagle specialist who appreciates eye appeal.

CAC has approved 3 coins in this grade with 5 finer.
