The 1843-D is among the more available half eagles from the Dahlonega mint. Its availability and relative ease to find well-made make it popular with type collectors.
This coin is housed in an old green label holder and I would grade it VF20 or so by today’s standards. It is problem-free, nicely toned and it shows excellent detail for the grade on the reverse.
No F15 examples of this date have sold at auction. An NGC F12 without a CAC sticker realized $1,410 as Stacks Bowers 6/14: 2520.
Nice quality for the grade and a pleasing, affordable Dahlonega half eagle with all the “bells and whistles.”
CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 18 finer.
