RARE 1842 QUARTER EAGLE

This date is the rarest Philadelphia quarter eagle struck for circulation between 1840 and 1863. Well under 100 are known from an original mintage of just 2,823 coins.

This example is lustrous and very well defined for the grade. Both sides show splashes of orange-gold color and there are a few small ticks seen on the rims.

Two different PCGS EF40 1842 quarter eagles appeared for sale in the Heritage 9/16 auction and both realized an identical $3,995.

DWN has sold a remarkable three of these in the last 90 days, but this is not likely to be repeated as years had passed since we had handled an 1842 quarter eagle.
