RARE 1831 QUARTER EAGLE, PCGS AU55

BD-1, R-4.

The short-lived Capped Head Left quarter eagle type contains just six issues, all of which are scarce, low mintage dates. The 1831 has an estimated 100-125 survivors from an original mintage of 4,520. When available in AU grades, the typical piece is scrubbed and unappealing.

This fresh-to-the-market example is lightly worn and very original with nice color. The obverse is choice with rich natural golden color deepening at the border; the reverse shows a mark (mint-made?) located the second U in PLURIBUS.

An under-graded PCGS AU55 1831 quarter eagle sold for a strong $21,150 as Heritage 9/16: 13937. The next most recent sale for a properly graded PCGS AU55is March 2014 when Heritage auctioned an example for $16,450. Only one other PCGS AU55 has sols at auction since late 2004.

This is an ideal type coin for the collector seeking a really nice circulated Capped Head Left quarter eagle.
