NUMISMATICALLY SIGNIFICANT 1866 MOTTO DOUBLE EAGLE

With Motto variety; designated by PCGS.

The 1866 Motto double eagle is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for Philadelphia Type Three double eagles. It becomes hard to locate in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated with most survivors in the MS60-61 range.

This fresh-to-the-market example shows light, even wear withfewer scuffs than normal for the issue. Both sides show pleasing natural orange-gold color framed by bands of lime at the borders. A small patch of dirt on the reverse rests over the right side of the E in STATES.

The last PCGS/CAC AU58 1866 Motto double eagle to sell at auction brought $8,225 as Heritage 2016 ANA: 6026. More recently, an NGC/CAC AU58 realized $7,638 as Heritage 1/17: 7089.

If you can find an 1866 Motto double eagle in PCGS/MS61 it will run you $15,000+ which makes this nice slider a very good value.

CAC has approved 23 in this grade with 15 finer.
