SCARCE 1844-C QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
Variety 1.
The 1844-C is one of the harder Charlotte quarter eagles to locate in higher grades, especially with good eye appeal. This was not a well-made issue and to compound this, most are seen with bright, scuffy surfaces.
This is a literally perfect coin for the grade with nice, even deep green-gold color on both sides and some dirt lodged in the recesses. The strike is better than average for the date with the usual weakness seen on the star radials but with very sharply defined centers. A few shallow marks in the lower right obverse field are not detracting.
Heritage 7/16: 4387, another PCGS EF45 example with CAC approval, brought $4,113.
Unless you are holding out for an expensive nice AU 1844-C, this piece should work well in your Charlotte quarter eagle set.
CAC has approved 6 in this grade with 11 finer.
