POSSIBLE FINEST KNOWN 1859-D GOLD DOLLAR

Variety 11-N.

Duke's Creek Pedigree

The 1859-D is the most available Type Three gold dollar from Dahlonega. It is comparably available in high grades with as many as two dozen extent in Uncirculated but it is very rare in MS63 and extremely rare in MS64 with just two or three known.

This is a famous coin in the annals of Dahlonega gold dollars and it is worthy of praise for its thick, frosty luster and its exceptional rose, green-gold and russet shadings. The strike is sharp for the issue with good detail noted but some minor weakness on the 5 in the date. This coin would likely be a Gem were it not for a very faint mint-made line on the cheek.

There is one other known in PCGS MS64 and it sold twice in 2005, once for $28,750 and a second time for $29,900.

If you collect Dahlonega gold and you desire the finest quality, you are unlikely to find a better 1859-D gold dollar than this.

Ex Heritage 4/06: 1491 ($23,000; as NGC MS64), Duke's Creek collection.
