RARE PCGS/CAC AU55 1881-CC HALF EAGLE

Variety 1-A.

The 1881-CC is, by a large margin, the scarcest Carson City half eagle made after 1878. Of the 13,886 struck, around 100-125 exist. This date becomes very hard to locate in the higher Uncirculated grades and in full Mint State, it is very rare with just three to five known.

This piece is housed in an older pre-barcode holder and it is highly lustrous with dramatic mint bloom seen on both sides. The strike is sharp save for the feathers on the eagle’s neck while the surfaces show a few small ticks were are consistent with the assigned grade. What appear to be scuffs on the reverse are from the holder and are not on the coin.

The last two APR’s for the 1881-CC half eagle both occurred in 2014 and were both for non-CAC examples; they sold for $8,225 and $8,813 respectively.

Any finer quality for this date will cost you into five-figures and will likely prove extremely elusive.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 5 finer.
