PCGS AU58 1845-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 13-H; date far to the left.

The 1845-D is among the more available Dahlonega half eagles and it makes a good type coin due to its typical above-average strike. It is scarce in properly graded AU58 while it is a rare and expensive issue in any Uncirculated grade.

This green-gold example deepens in hue towards the rims, especially on the obverse. It is well struck and lustrous with no significant, detracting abrasions. The overall eye appeal is above-average for both the date and the grade.

Only one PCGS AU58 1845-D half eagle has sold at auction since July 2012 and it was a low-end piece which realized $4,935.

This would make an excellent type representative of a high grade Dahlonega half eagle and such coins are becoming more difficult to locate with the passing of every year.
