RARE UNCIRCULATED 1848 QUARTER EAGLE

It is likely that as few as seven to nine Uncirculated 1848 quarter eagles exist which means that this issue is actually noticeably more rare in Mint State than its famous 1848 CAL. quarter eagle counterpart.

This example is semi-prooflike but it shows the familiar die finishing lines in the fields seen on higher grade 1848 quarter eagles. The strike is sharp and there is no wear on the high spots and only minor luster breaks in the fields. Both sides show a nice rich yellow-gold hue with some deeper coloring at the edges. The eye appeal is excellent and this is a really nice example of a date that I seldom see in grades above AU55.

Just one MS61 1848 quarter eagle in a PCGS holder has sold since 2003 and it was auctioned twice in 2012; once for $4,994 and the other time for $5,463.

This has to be one of the better values in the entire quarter eagles series: a true condition rarity at just a smidge over $5,000.
