The 1857-S half eagle has a very low survival rate and around 125-150 are known from the original mintage of 87,000. This date is more available in Uncirculated than any other SF half eagle from this decade but it is still rare in properly grade AU55 and above.
This lustrous slider shows little real wear but the surfaces, as usual, are fairly scuffy from rough handling in a bag. The luster has a slightly reflective texture and the color is a nice medium orange-gold with some splashes of red on the obverse and, more so, on the reverse.
Only two PCGS AU58 1857-S half eagles have ever sold at auction and the last, pedigreed to the S.S. Central America brought a healthy $7,475 in April 2008.
Unless you have five figures (and a lot of patience) to spend on an Uncirculated example, this is essentially the nicest 1857-S half eagle you are likely to find.
