SOLD–$5.00 – 1853-D NGC AU58 CAC Old Holder
Serial Number 272727-009
PCGS Lookup Number 8255
Large D mintmark. Variety 34-Y. Housed in an old “fatty” holder.
The 1853-D is the most common half eagle from the Dahlonega mint. It is seen most often in the EF and lower AU. It is scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and rare in Uncirculated.
This coin was slabbed many years ago by NGC and it is notable for its intense mint luster and near-lack of wear. The strike is typical for the date with some weakness at the left obverse which has made the radial lines of stars one-four invisible; the centers are quite sharp and well-detailed. The obverse appears to have been dipped many years ago but has much original “skin” while the reverse has pleasing natural orange-gold color with a spot of toning below the eagle’s left wing.
This is a perfect coin for the collector who is looking for one choice “slider” half eagle from this mint for a type collection.
Ex Heritage 11/12: 4960 where it brought $4,700.
CAC has approved four examples in this grade with five finer.
