After years of neglect, collectors have finally learned that issues like the 1851-O half eagle are actually scarcer than comparable Charlotte and Dahlonega issues and prices have risen accordingly. The 1851-O is scarce in all grades with an estimated 100-125 known, mostly in the VF-EF range.
This choice russet-gold example has plenty of dirt caked into the lettering and it is one of the few I have seen which hasn’t been stripped-n-dipped. The centers show lightness of strike as on all known 1851-O half eagles from this die pair but the overall look is excellent for the grade.
An unappealing NGC EF45 sold for $2,350 as Heritage 4/14: 6387 while a nice PCGS EF45 with CAC sold for $3,527 as Heritage 1/14: 6667.
