The 1843-C is one of the more available early date half eagles from the Charlotte mint but it is harder to find than the comparably valued issues from the latter part of this decade. It is numismatically significant as the final Charlotte half eagle to appear with small lettering on the reverse.
This is a choice, original piece with nice coloration. The centers are a rich green-gold hue and are accentuated by splashes of rich coppery-orange on both sides. The detail is close to a full EF40 but there are some shallow marks on both sides.
The last PCGS VF30 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 7/09: 1478, which sold for $1,495.
This is the only 1843-C half eagle to have been approved by CAC in this grade; eight finer have been approved as well.
