Large Date variety.
This is the more common of the two varieties of half eagles made in Charlotte in 1842. This is the exact opposite scenario to the 1842-D half eagles where there are also two varieties but the Large Date is the rarer. The 1842-C Large Date is usually seen in VF-EF grades. It is scarce in AU.
This piece has light yellow-gold color but retains a good amount of natural mint luster. There is some weakness of strike at the central reverse as is typical for the issue. Some marks can be seen in the fields and there is some min-made roughness in the planchet at star one and near the 1 in the date.
The last PCGS AU50 example of this date to sell at auction was ANR 8/06: 1383 which realized $3,450. There have been just four PCGS AU50′s sold at auction since the beginning of 1992.
With so-so EF examples of this date selling for $2,250-2,500, an AU50 at just a few hundred dollars more seems like good value to me.
