Housed in an old green label holder and significantly undergraded by todays standards, in my opinion.
The 1880-O is the first collectable With Motto eagle struck by the New Orleans mint after production was resumed in 1879. Only 9,200 were made with around 250-300 known today.
This choice example shows splashes of rich natural orange-gold color and is less “marky” than usual for the date. Some luster remains and the overall level of eye appeal is excellent.
The only auction record for an OGH 1880-O eagle in EF40 with CAC is this exact coin; see below.
A neat piece for the advanced specialist.
Ex Heritage 6/14: 5772 at $4,113 and earlier ex Heritage 2/14: 5419 where it sold for $3,819.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 13 higher.
